TPO: The Modern Choice
TPO has surpassed EPDM as the most popular flat roofing material nationally, and for good reason. Its white reflective surface reduces cooling loads in summer — a real advantage in Philadelphia's hot, humid summers when AC bills spike. Heat-welded seams are stronger than EPDM's adhesive seams, directly addressing the main failure point on flat roofs: seam separation.
The downside: TPO is relatively newer, so its 30+ year track record is still being established. In extreme cold, TPO can become brittle at seams over time. EPDM: The Proven Workhorse

What About Modified Bitumen?
Modified bitumen (mod-bit) is an older flat roofing system still widely installed in Philadelphia.
